Let it Flow

October 8th, 2008

As a good friend recently said: “Kwani Experience has had a phenomenal year.”

Safari so good.

Having just returned from the Morija Festival in Lesotho, the band leaves for Norway this month (see press release below).

Kwani is currently in discussions with friends in Namibia for a possible date later this year, and Maputo looks set to happen on the 29th of November, as well as possible Durban dates at the Zulu Jazz Lounge.

After returning from Norway on the 25th October, we are filming for “Late Night With Kgomotso” on the 27th, and play at House of Nsako on the 31st with the Shadow Club.

A Live Without Fear Halloween Party.

The wheels are in motion for a few Cape Town gigs in early December, then the Vodacom Jazz Picnic in Ekurhuleni on the 16th December.

Furthermore, the band awaits confirmation for a New Year’s Eve gig in Nairobi.

Eish.

We also sell great t-shirts and sometimes cd’s. Cheap.

PRESS RELEASE!

OFF THE HOOK PRODUCTION PRESENTS BRIDGE THE GAP

KWANI EXPERIENCE IS OFF TO TURN NORWAY UPSIDE DOWN!

Acclaimed Jozi-band, Kwani Experience is off to Norway and is set to turn heads, hearts and minds upside down during a 10-day exchange program in Oslo, 15 to 24 October 2008.

Bridge The Gap

The popular band has been chosen by Off The Hook Production to front the project BRIDGE THE GAP, which will see the band collaborating with musicians, dancers and singers in Norway.

Activities in Norway

Kwani Experience will do workshops and performances in Oslo and also do rehearsals with dancers in a stage production called “Afro-Euro” which will later go on a tour in South Africa.

Ambassadors with attitude

- Kwani Experience is a great ambassador for the contemporary young pulse of South Africa, says Project Director, Brother Buntu. – They push boundaries and represent both traditions, fusion and experimentation. Kwani brings together the past, present and future through their eclectic style and appeal to young people with their “I-define-myself” attitude.

Fearless musicians

The 6-piece live-band brings together jazz, soul, hip-hop and African traditional sounds fused with a message of inspiration and rootedness. In South Africa they have been hailed as an innovative group of fearless musicians, providing the soundtrack for a soul-searching generation in “the new South Africa”. Their two releases, “The Mudaland Funk” (2005) and “Live After Birth” (2007) have become landmarks in contemporary South African music, and through their tours to many countries they have grown a large following around the world.

Partnerships

Kwani Experience will be hosted by Nordic Black Theatre in Norway and work and meet with many artists based in and around Oslo. The program is a partnership initiated and coordinated by Off The Hook Productions in South Africa, and the exchange is funded by MMINO.

Blues and Jazz

September 25th, 2008

This Sunday 28th DJ Bob plays at Soulsa on 7th in Merlville from 1pm until 5pm. Expect a chilled out jazzy, bluesy type sunday thingy. Book a table and come for that late Sunday lunch/ brunch.

On Sunday night at 7pm, also at Soulsa, Paul Hanmer and McCoy Mrubatha make a rare appearance. Details below.

Paul Hanmer and McCoy Mrubata live @ Soulsa

Celebrated pianist Paul Hanmer will be joined by saxophonist McCoy Mrubata for a rare performance on Sunday night 28th of Sept. Paul’s musical talents are vast. Not only is he a recording artist and session pianist, but he enjoys working as a composer and an arranger. He loves to work with other composers who have a distinctive South African voice and are proud of it. With his love for collaborative work, Paul has recorded with the likes of Tananas, Miriam Makeba, Ray Phiri, McCoy Mrubata and Unofficial Language. He also formed part of and toured with Tony Cox’s Cool Friction and collaborated with Pops Mohamed, for a “Main Stage” production at the Grahamstown Festival. He has released the critically acclaimed albums Trains to Taung, Water and Lights, Naivasha, Playola and Windows to Elsewhere. As “Unofficial Language” where he was joined by Pete Sklair and Ian Herman, he released Primal Steps.

Besides recording his own music prolifically McCoy has collaborated with a dazzling array of South African jazz players, and with overseas artists such as Airto Moreira and Flora Purim. He has been involved in drama, creating scores for South African productions about journalist Bloke Modisane and saxophone legend Kippie Moeketsi, and in 2001 starring in a Norwegian production based on the life of John Coltrane. He has also created what he calls the Oyoung Friends: a collaboration with the next generation of South African jazzmen.

We are very proud to be presenting this performance: Paul’s music has become a strong feature of Soulsa’s over the years and we look forward to hearing him live.

This event begins at 7 pm. The cost is R250 per head and this includes dinner and dessert. Booking is essential.
