DJ Bob started buying records back in 1984 where he attended school in Bethlehem, Eastern Free State. After school he dabbled in meteorology, waitering, and restaurant management, all the while pursuing his interest in music and building up a collection which he is still fanatical about today. It all changed in 1991 when he moved to Yeoville in Johannesburg and started working with live bands and artists such as Johnny Fourie, ZimNgqawana and Musik ye Afrika. After many successful live gigs, he opened his own venue, Mojo’s in 1993. Initially
this was exclusively a live blues and jazz venue. Under the influence of DJ Bob and partner, Alan Freeman, in 1995 it morphed into 206 Live, which changed many mindsets, set new standards and brought a fresh angle to the live venue, DJ and clubbing industry in Johannesburg (and to Cape Town for a while), until its untimely demise in 2001.
During these heady and hectic days, DJ Bob and his friends built up a rep and toured around the South African festival circuit extensively. In 1997 DJ Bob and His brother DJ T! playedOppikoppi for the first time, before establishing the SiphoGumede stage at the festival. Ably assisted by a Blunted Stuntman and DJ Kenzhero, this stage continues to bring fresh new DJ’s, dance acts and underground bands to the festival every year.
In recent years, DJ Bob has extended his reach across Africa, managing tours to Mozambique and Angola. In collaboration with the French Institute in both these countries he has taken acts like 340ml, DJ Kenzhero, Pops Mohammed and Kwani Experience to private venues and festivals, as well as tour managing international acts like DJ Oil and Nansahlla (a collective of Mozambican and French musicians who play instruments made entirely of recycled materials) around Namibia and South Africa.
In 2008 he toured with Kwani Experience to Norway where they collaborated with the Black Theatre Express and performed to packed houses as well as conducted workshops at schools in Oslo. This was part of a MMINO funded exchange program.
This year he worked with the Radio Marrabenta Project on an extensive tour of Mozambique in February and also accompanied Hugh Masakela to the MozJazz Fest in Maputo in April.
At home in Johannesburg DJ Bob works in a freelance capacity as booking agent for bands like 340 ml, Radio Marrabenta, Kwani Experience, Laurie Levine, DJ Kenzhero and Albert Frost amongst others. He has toured with legends like BaabaMaal from Senegal, Lloyd Cole and Michelle Shocked from the United States, on their visits to SA. He is a producer on large-scale music productions like Levi’s Vintage Sundays in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Soweto, and works with OppiKoppi Productions on the Old Mutual Encounters at Emmarentia Dam. As an event production specialist, he often works with partners Josh Georgiou and Alan Freeman of 206 Productions. He is also world renowned as a stage manager, bar builder, fisherman, photographer, braaimeester and, of course, prolific DJ.
